The Last of Us fans are convinced the game’s ‘biggest moment is arriving in the next episode of the HBO series.

Returning on Sunday night (April 13) for its second season, the adaption of the video game first aired in the UK on Sky in 2023.

Set twenty years into a mass fungal infection pandemic, the series follows Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) as they battle zombie-like creatures.

Based on the 2013 PlayStation game, the first season was rated 96% by critics on Rotten Tomatoes and was nominated for a staggering 24 Emmy Awards, winning eight.

With the second season following the divisive second game, released in 2020, the first episode of the new season featured a five year time jump.

Now living in a camp in Jackson, Wyoming, Joel and Ellie are on bad terms, with viewers left assuming the truth of what happened at the end of the first season has come to light.

For those who don’t remember, Joel killed the doctors who were going to remove Ellie’s brain as she’s immune to the virus and could provide a cure for humanity.

Once Ellie recovered from the anesthesia the doctors used on her, Joel lied and said that the doctors were unable to create a cure and were attacked by a group of raiders.

Now, Joel is in therapy with Catherine O’Hara’s mystery therapist, who is not in the games, while Ellie found a new variant of the diseased humans and shared a kiss with her friend Dina.

One pivotal scene saw Joel attacking a man who shouted a homophobic term at Ellie, who demanded that he stays away from her.

Ignoring Joel at the end of the episode, who fixed her guitar for her, fans were left worried by a new group of characters approaching their commune.

Led by a woman Abby, played by Kaitlyn Deever, the intimidating group vowed at the start of the episode that they would ‘kill Joel slowly’ for what he did to the Firefly’s group of medics.

While it’s unclear if the series will follow the game’s narrative, Sunday’s (April 20) upcoming episode has the potential to be one of the most talked about of the year.

Fans of the show rushed to X, previously known as Twitter, to express their worries that viewers who haven’t played the game are in for an intense hour of television.

@dn4lover said: "All i can think about is The Last of Us season 2 episode 2 and how insane it will be.” @schelle017 added: “If it is anything like the source material, it's going to be an all timer episode.”

@drumkea wrote: “Finally got around to watching Last of Us Season 2 Ep. 1, and Ellie and Dina had me kicking my feet and smiling the entire time. That said I’m scared for what’s to come.” @M3RK_Blaze posted: “First episode of The Last Of Us Season 2 was amazing. I'm not ready for the next episode. If you know you know.”

@lucysgames_ commented: “I’m so ready for The Last of Us Season 2 but I’m also so not ready for The Last of Us Season 2.” @theanonswiftie noted: “I don’t think the world is ready for episode 2 of The Last of Us.”

For those already worried about the episode, it doesn’t help that its director Mark Mylod is behind some of another HBO series’ most explosive episodes.

Among the Succession episodes Mylod directed is the infamous Connor’s Wedding and the final episode of the show With Open Eyes.
